Pharmacy Department
Pharmacy department, Windhoek Central Hospital provides pharmaceutical care services to both inpatients and outpatients seen at the various specialized clinics in the hospital. The department consists of the main pharmacy and five satellite pharmacies situated at various specialized clinics. These satellite pharmacies include:
- Oncology Pharmacy
- Maternity Pharmacy
- ARV pharmacy
- Mental Health Pharmacy
- Cardiac Unit Pharmacy
The functions of the department include the following
- Planning and ordering medicines from central medical stores. Ensure availability of medicines.
- Dispensing medicines to both inpatients and outpatients as per standard operating procedures.
- Improving patient education on disease states, drug use and possible side effects.
- Identifying and avoiding contraindicated drugs and improving adherence of patients on chronic medication.
- Promoting rational drug use. Advocating for treatment guideline adherence.
- Training of student pharmacists, student pharmacist assistants and trainee pharmacists.
- Pharmacovigilance – identification and reporting of adverse drug reactions.
- Generation and reporting of statistical data for purposes of planning and to provide for necessary interventions that improve quality of pharmaceutical services.
