Orthopaedic Technical Services


The Orthopaedic Technical Services is responsible for the prescription, design and provision of quality, affordable, accessible and sustainable prosthetic and orthotic services that are responsive to the needs of the population.

The OTS department offers prosthetic and orthotic services.

Our prosthetic services

  • Our prosthetic services focused on prescribing patients with prosthetic devices and provide care, support to amputees or to other individuals who have a limb deficiency.
  • We prescribe, fabricate and fit prostheses by provide ongoing care and device maintenance throughout each user’s life to ensure their needs are continuously met.
  • Our aim is to give the highest quality care, helping patients live life as independently as possible.
  • A prosthesis is an artificial device attached or applied to the body to replace a missing part (such as an arm or leg following amputation).
Our Orthotic Service
  • Our orthotic services focused on prescribing patients with orthotic devices, fitting those devices and providing ongoing care for as long as required.
  • Orthotic devices, or orthoses, are devices worn externally on the body to control, realign and support bones and muscles.
  • We provide a comprehensive inpatient orthotic service to aid movement, correct deformity and relieve discomfort.
  • The OTS department specializes in complex rehabilitation problems for patients with musculoskeletal, degenerative and/or neuromuscular problems.
  • An orthosis is an externally applied device used to modify the structural or functional characteristics of the neuro-muscular and skeletal systems.
  • The OTS department provide patients with compression stocking for Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Varicose Veins.
  • OTS department also provide walking aids such as walking frame, elbow and axillary crutches.
DEFINITIONS

Orthotics and Prosthetics
Science and art of treating people by the use of orthoses and prostheses (Field of study).

Orthotist and Prosthetist
A person who has completed an approved course of education and training and is authorized by an appropriate national authority to design, measure and fit orthoses and prostheses.

Orthosis
Externally applied device used to modify the structural and functional characteristics of the neuromuscular and skeletal systems.

Prosthesis
Externally applied device used to replace wholly or partly an absent or deficient limb.
